Can you claim points for your work experience?
You may be able to claim up to 20 points for your skilled work experience, providing you were suitably qualified and your employment was in your nominated skilled occupation or a closely related skilled occupation.
A cap of 20 points applies if you were employed both in Australia and overseas in the last 10 years – this means that even if you score more than 20 points for your combined employment history you will only be awarded 20 points for it.
Additionally, if any of your employment was undertaken in Australia it must have been obtained legally, i.e you must have held a relative visa with working rights or a Bridging A or B visa and you must have complied with your visa conditions.
Only full-time employment will be recognised – based on at least 20 hours a week, although some skills assessing authority will only accept your employment if it was for 38 hours per week.
Bonus points
You may get bonus points for completion of a Professional Year in Australia. You may also get points for successful passing of the Credentialed Community Language Test (CCL) – for those who are accredited at the paraprofessional level or above, certified at the certified provisional level or above, or have a community language credential for interpreting or translating by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters
