Why follow up on job applications?
Australian employers received hundreds –sometimes thousands– of applications and your application may be missed. Employers are also busy and following up is also a way to not only confirm your interest, but also show a prospective employer that you are organised and diligent.
How to follow up on your applications
Below are some recommended strategies and good-practices to follow up on your Australian job applications.
Wait at least a week
Give the employer some time to review your application before following up. Waiting at least a week is usually appropriate.
Send a polite email
Send a polite email to the employer, thanking them for considering your application and expressing your continued interest in the position.
Be specific
Include specific details about the position you applied for and when you submitted your application.
Highlight your skills and experience
Use the email as an opportunity to highlight your skills and experience again, and explain why you’re a good fit for the role.
Keep it concise
Your email should be no longer than a few paragraphs. Be polite and to the point.
Ask for an update
Ask if there’s any update on the hiring process or if there’s anything else you can provide to support your application.
Provide your contact information
Make sure to include your contact information in case the employer wants to reach out to you.
Don’t follow up too frequently
While it’s ok to follow up once, don’t send multiple emails or make repeated phone calls. This could come across as pushy and may hurt your chances of getting a job.
Remember, following up on a job application can help to demonstrate your interest in the role and keep you top of mind for the employer. Just be sure to do it in a polite and professional manner.
